Arūpajjhānā
— The Formless Jhānas —
[arūpa+jhāna]

Here are the stock formulae describing the absorptions of samādhi beyond the fourth jhāna, which are referred to in late Pali litterature as arūpajjhānas. For conventional purposes, the cessation of perceptions and feelings is considered as the ninth jhāna.

Bhikkhu sabbaso rūpa·saññānaṃ samatikkamā, paṭigha·saññānaṃ atthaṅgamā, nānatta·saññānaṃ a·manasikārā, ‘ananto ākāsoti ākās·ānañc·āyatanaṃ upasampajja viharati.

A bhikkhu, having completely gone beyond rūpa·saññā, the saññā of repulsion having disappeared, not attending to the saññā of diversity, [perceiving:] 'space [is] infinite', having entered ākās·ānañc·āyatana, dwells therein.

Bhikkhu sabbaso rūpa·saññānaṃ samatikkamā,

A bhikkhu, having completely gone beyond rūpa·saññā,

paṭigha·saññānaṃ atthaṅgamā,

the saññā of repulsion having disappeared,

nānatta·saññānaṃ a·manasikārā,

not attending to the saññā of diversity,

ananto ākāsoti

[perceiving:] 'space [is] infinite',
