Here the Buddha defines in detail what he calls the five Sekha-balas (strenghs of one in training). This sutta is easily understandable without requiring a parallel translation, if you refer to the Satta saddhammā Formulae as will be suggested in the text. Pañcimāni, bhikkhave, sekha-balāni. Katamāni pañca? Saddhā-balaṃ, hirī-balaṃ, ottappa-balaṃ, vīriya-balaṃ, paññā-balaṃ. Katamañca, bhikkhave, saddhā-balaṃ? Idha, bhikkhave, ariyasāvako saddho hoti, saddahati tathāgatassa bodhiṃ: itipi so Bhagavā arahaṃ sammā-Sambuddho, vijjācaraṇasampanno, sugato, lokavidū, anuttaro purisadammasārathi, satthā devamanussānaṃ, Buddho Bhagavā’ ti. Idaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, saddhābalaṃ.

Tasmātiha, bhikkhave, evaṃ sikkhitabbaṃ: ‘saddhābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, hirībalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, ottappabalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, vīriyabalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalena, paññābalena samannāgatā bhavissāma sekhabalenā’ti.
