The title of this collection comes from the sentence introducing each of the 112 short suttas it contains: 'vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā, vuttamarahatāti me sutaṃ'. The Itivuttaka is one of the oldest parts of the Pali Canon, as it is cited in various suttas where are enumerated the collections of teachings of the Buddha, as they were in his time. It is not possible though to evaluate to which extent this collection corresponds to what is refered to in those suttas.
- Mettābhāvanā Sutta (Iti 27) {excerpt} - enhanced translation
- The Buddha speaks in high praise of the practice of Mettā.
