Ekaṃ samayaṃ āyasmā sāriputto magadhesu viharati nālakagāmake. Atha kho jambukhādako paribbājako yenāyasmā sāriputto ten·upasaṅkami; upasaṅkamitvā āyasmatā sāriputtena saddhiṃ sammodi. Sammodanīyaṃ kathaṃ sāraṇīyaṃ vītisāretvā ekam·antaṃ nisīdi. Ekam·antaṃ nisinno kho jambukhādako paribbājako āyasmantaṃ sāriputtaṃ etad·avoca: | On one occasion, the venerable Sāriputta was dwelling in Magadha, at Nālakagāma. Then, Jambukhādaka the wanderer approached the venerable Sāriputta; having approached the venerable Sāriputta, he exchanged friendly greetings with him. Having exchanged friendly greetings and courtesies, he sat down to one side. Sitting down to one side, Jambukhādaka the wanderer said to the venerable Sāriputta: |

Ke nu kho, āvuso sāriputta, loke dhamma·vādino, ke loke suppaṭipannā, ke loke sugatā ti?

Who in the world, friend Sāriputta, professes the Dhamma, who in the world is practicing well, who in the world is faring well?

Ye kho, āvuso, rāga·p·pahānāya dhammaṃ desenti, dosa·p·pahānāya dhammaṃ desenti, moha·p·pahānāya dhammaṃ desenti, te loke dhamma·vādino. Ye kho, āvuso, rāgassa pahānāya paṭipannā, dosassa pahānāya paṭipannā, mohassa pahānāya paṭipannā, te loke suppaṭipannā. Yesaṃ kho, āvuso, rāgo pahīno ucchinna·mūlo tālā·vatthu·kato anabhāvaṅ·kato āyatiṃ anuppāda·dhammo, doso pahīno ucchinna·mūlo tālā·vatthukato anabhāvaṅ·kato āyatiṃ anuppāda·dhammo, moho pahīno ucchinna·mūlo tālā·vatthu·kato anabhāvaṅ·kato āyatiṃ anuppāda·dhammo, te loke sugatā’ti.

Those, friend, who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of craving, who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of aversion, who teach the Dhamma for the abandoning of delusion, they in the world profess the Dhamma. Those, friend, who are practicing for the abandoning of craving, who are practicing for the abandoning of aversion, who are practicing for the abandoning of delusion, they in the world are practicing well. Those, friend, who have abandoned craving, destroyed its root, uprooted it like a palm stump, brought it to its utter cessation, not being subject to arising in the future, who have abandoned aversion, destroyed its root, uprooted it like a palm stump, brought it to its utter cessation, not being subject to arising in the future, who have abandoned delusion, destroyed its root, uprooted it like a palm stump, brought it to its utter cessation, not being subject to arising in the future, they in the world are faring well.

– Atthi pan·āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā ti? | – Then, friend, is there a path, is there a way for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion? |
– Atthi kho, āvuso, maggo atthi paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā ti. | – There is a path, friend, there is a way for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion. |
– Katamo, pan·āvuso, maggo katamā paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā ti? | – What then, friend, is the path, what is the way for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion? |
– Ayam·eva kho, āvuso, ariyo aṭṭh·aṅgiko maggo etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāya, seyyathidaṃ: sammā·diṭṭhi sammā·saṅkappo sammā·vācā sammā·kammanto sammā·ājīvo sammā·vāyāmo sammā·sati sammā·samādhi. Ayaṃ kho, āvuso, maggo ayaṃ paṭipadā etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāyā ti. | – There is just, friend, this noble eightfold path for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion, that is to say: right view, right intention, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness and right concentration. This, friend, is the noble eightfold path for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion. |
– Bhaddako, āvuso, maggo bhaddikā paṭipadā, etassa rāgassa dosassa mohassa pahānāya. Alañca pan·āvuso sāriputta, appamādāyā ti. | – The path is excellent, friend, the way is excellent, for the abandoning of these craving, aversion and delusion. And, friend Sāriputta, it is enough for assiduity. |
